Dear CCV Faculty Colleagues,
I had an interesting teaching assignment this summer: English Composition for the Air National Guard on their base in South Burlington. CCV asked me to do this because of my service in Vietnam and also because of my 20 years teaching at CCV.
Twenty men and women in uniform, very attentive, engaged, always on time with everything. It was enjoyable and a lot of work: I had to modify my syllabus for 12 weeks and incorporate parts of the 300-plus page Air Force manual on writing. And 20 English Composition students means a lot of papers to read, correct, edit, and grade.
If I had been a part-time faculty member at any of the other VSCs my pay would have been $5,559. Instead, I got paid the CCV flat rate of $3,822.
CCV has fallen woefully behind our sister colleges in the fair treatment of its faculty.
Nearly everyone I’ve worked with at CCV, including many coordinators over the years, has been respectful, supportive, and friendly. This isn’t a personal thing. It’s systemic and only organized work through the AFT can get us a fair deal. I’m voting “Yes” on the union.
Best wishes for the fall, don’t hesitate to contact me with questions.
